Chad Gosselin stopped by Right On Radio on WBCR-LP Great Barrington Monday night, a celebrated appearance in honor of An Uncelebrated Homecoming, his debut EP. Does your hometown feel like an abyss? Does great Blues music have a particular resonance? Have you ever felt like a stranger in the very place you were raised? These are just some questions that came up over an hour of music and discussion with this up-and-coming recording artist from Boston. First we delved into Chad's influences, spinning some of Chad's own fine vinyl including some gritty authentic blues. Then we heard Ohio, the lead song from the EP which featured a layered and evocative texture and a sweet melody. Chad brought us home with an in-studio performance of Daylight Savings Blues, an acoustic gem that for me at least conjures images of swirling fall leaves and an encroaching winter wind on your cheeks. Monday night though, due to the presence of this gifted performer, it was all warmth in BCR's studios. Next time Chad Gosselin comes to South Berkshire County it is sure to be a celebrated visit.

What is it with Ohio? There are plenty of states with three syllables: Flo-ri-da. A-las-ka. New Hamp-shire. Why ever it is that songwriters keep coming back to this state (including Crosby, Stills & Nash as well as Mean Creek), Chad Gosselin channels something special in his "Ohio."

The state of Ohio links the Northeast with the Midwest areas of the country. Gosselin somehow channels this linkage and places it into musical form with this song, which has both the electrified sounds that are familiar to our area, as well as a more open-feeling arrangement/tempo that evokes feelings of unfamiliar states and regions of the country, where huge rivers flow more freely, and you can see more than a few hundred yards in each direction.

Gosselin's "Ohio" is true gateway music. Gosselin seems to be singing from Boston, but he's looking west, and from the sounds of this song, he can truly see all the way there. Even better, he helps us see it as well.
